چکیده

JCB • VOLUME 191 • NUMBER 2 • 2010 228 T he mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are a class of serine/threonine kinases that frequently act as fulcrums in the cellular response to stressful stimuli. Jiahuai Han discovered the p38 MAPK (1), and he’s spent much of his career characterizing members of the p38 family and the many roles they play in cells (2). Han regards his work on p38 as an important facet of his career, but he says that his real interest is in the cellular response to stress, particularly infl ammation (3, 4). His work has touched on many topics related to this subject over the course of his career, and Han has fearlessly pursued the answers to his questions, wherever they lead him. In fact, this pursuit has led him to many different geographical places— from China at the start of his research career, to his preand postdoctoral studies in the United States and Belgium (5), a tenured position at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, and fi nally a return to China. We called him at his lab at Xiamen University, Fujian Province, to talk about his many travels.

Hepatoprotective effects of licochalcone B on carbon tetrachloride-induced liver toxicity in mice

Objective(s): The objective of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of licochalcone B (LCB) in a mice model of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver toxicity. Materials and Methods: Hepatotoxicity was induced in mice by a single subcutaneous injection (SC) of CCl4. The LCB was administered orally once a day for seven days (PO) as pretreatment at three doses of 1, 5, and...

The role of the p38 pathway in adaptive immunity.

Since its discovery in 1993, the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase p38 has attracted much attention for its role in a wide range of cellular processes, many of which involve the immune system. Although p38 has been heavily implicated in the function of all type immune cells, research has tended focus on its role in innate immunity. In this review we attempt to highlight some of the major d...

p38 and a p38-Interacting Protein Are Critical for Downregulation of E-Cadherin during Mouse Gastrulation

During vertebrate gastrulation, an epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is necessary for migration of mesoderm from the primitive streak. We demonstrate that p38 MAP kinase and a p38-interacting protein (p38IP) are critically required for downregulation of E-cadherin during gastrulation. In an ENU-mutagenesis screen we identified the droopy eye (drey) mutation, which affects splicing of p...
